The Troop One Uniform

Troop One takes pride in its uniform. While other troops have a more casual look, Troop One Scouts believe that when we do Scouting, we should look like Scouts. This was part of the vision of Boy Scouts Founder Baden-Powell, and that vision lives on today. Uniforming is one of the eight Methods used to accomplish the Scouting Aims of Character, Citizenship, & Fitness.

The uniform makes the Scout troop visible as a force for good and creates a positive youth image in the community. Boy Scouting is an action program, and wearing the uniform is an action that shows each Scout's commitment to the aims and purposes of Scouting. The uniform gives the Scout identity in a world brotherhood of youth who believe in the same ideals.

The uniform is practical attire for Scout activities, and provides a way for Scouts to wear the badges that display what each Scout has accomplished, the knowledge obtained, and skills acquired.

The Boy Scout Uniform has long served as an expression of a Scout's friendliness to all, regardless of who they are or where they're from. The uniform represents Scouting Spirit, and identifies a boy as a brother to every other Scout. Wearing the uniform promotes fellowship, loyalty to one's patrol and troop, and public recognition of membership in the Boy Scouts of America.

Troop One has one uniform with three variations we wear on a regular basis:

Field Uniform
Worn to all troop meetings, and when we go out in public as a group

Full Class A
Worn on special occasions such as Boards of Review or Courts of Honor

Activity Uniform
Worn when we do any kind of work or play where we physical activity is involved.

Troop One Boy Scout Shirt

Sewing all the patches on to a Boy Scout shirt takes a little time, and placing the patches in the right place is an almost an art unto itself. To know where each patch goes, refer to the Official Placement of Insignia.

The shirt is a short-sleeved, khaki in color, with the following patches sewn on or attached using an adhesive product (Badge Magic, for example):

The Field Uniform

The field uniform consists of:

  • A Scout Shirt as noted above
  • Troop One Kerchief (provided by the Troop)
  • Neckerchief Slide of the Scout's choosing
  • Olive-green webbed belt with brass buckle or other BSA belt
  • Olive-green Scout shorts
  • Olive-green knee high socks with red tops
  • Shoes of the Scout's choosing

Although not required, when a Scout wears a t-shirt underneath his Scout shirt, he often wears his Activity t-shirt.

Full Class A

Although the term "Full Class A" isn't listed in any BSA literature (it's a military term), most Scouts and Scouters know and use it. Conforming to Full Class A means wearing the following:

  • The Field Uniform
  • Merit Badge Sash
  • Special Medals Awarded to Scout

Activity Uniform

The Activity Uniform serves the Troop in several instances. For example, wearing the Scout shirt under a backpack can be problematic as it's easy to rip an epaulet when putting on or taking off a backpack. Also, when Scouts do community service, the work can be messy, so we'd rather soil a t-shirt than our uniforms. In these situations, the Troop wears the Activity Uniform:

  • Maroon Troop One Activity t-shirt (available through the Troop)
  • Olive-green webbed belt with brass buckle or other BSA belt
  • Olive-green Scout shorts
  • Knee high socks with red tops
  • Shoes of the Scout's choosing

All these items can be found at McCaulou's Department Store in Montclair Village or at the East Bay Scout Store. You may also purchase some of these items through the Piedmont Council Office.
